General Officers of the US Army in the Civil War

Union Generals of the American Civil War

This listing contains the names of the general officers of the Regular Army
and of the Volunteer Army, as well as the date of their appointment to the
rank.

The names are taken from

Statistical Record by Frederick Phisterer

Published 1883, New York

In all cases only the full rank is given. Many officers had a brevet
(or temporary) rank that was often one or two ranks higher than the full rank.
Remember also, that it was possible for an officer to have rank in a state
militia, the Volunteer Army, and the Regular Army; all at the same time. With
brevet ranks taken into account, it was possible for an individual to have as
many as six ranks simultaneously, depending upon who he was dealing with.
